{"id":1443,"date":"2022-06-22T04:43:38","date_gmt":"2022-06-22T04:43:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/philadelphiacongregations.org\/home\/?p=1443"},"modified":"2022-06-22T04:43:39","modified_gmt":"2022-06-22T04:43:39","slug":"two-emergency-burials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/philadelphiacongregations.org\/home\/two-emergency-burials\/","title":{"rendered":"Two emergency burials?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>by Jean Craig<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the course of transcribing lists of names and dates to expand their usefulness locally and throughout the world of research, aspects recorded in otherwise repetitive information wakes up curiosity, and these details evoke yet other questions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/philadelphiacongregations.org\/records\/item\/PHS.SecondPresbyterianChurchBurialRecords_Vol4#?c=&amp;m=&amp;s=&amp;cv=51&amp;xywh=-1%2C-2028%2C10017%2C11974\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">volume 4 of the Burial Records of the Second Presbyterian Church, p. 48<\/a>: February 20<sup>th<\/sup>, 1819 records the burial of \u201ca child of a stranger at the furlgate in the Old York Road.\u201d\u00a0 Wikipedia says that the Old York Road was built in the 18<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century to connect Philadelphia and New York City.\u00a0 Its beginning (or one end) was at 4<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0and Vine, not far from Second Presbyterian Church, or from a fair number of other Philadelphia churches.\u00a0 What was the connection to this church?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What was a furlgate?&nbsp; The Internet pointed to the English word falgate, derived from the Middle English \u201cfold gate\u201d; this was an entryway to an enclosure, possibly for cattle or sheep. Were the people drovers who made the request for burial?&nbsp; The word came to mean an inn-yard.&nbsp; Various inns of England have the name Falgate; were the people in Pennsylvania traveling by the Swift Sure Stage Coach Line which covered the York Road route and perhaps had stopped somewhere still known as the falgate to deal with a four-year old child in distress?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The time of year would have meant penetrating cold and precipitation.&nbsp; Were the travelers near enough to Philadelphia to hope they\u2019d arrive soon enough to get help for the child?&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Whoever sought burial for the child had to come up with $8 for the cost of interment.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0From <a href=\"https:\/\/philadelphiacongregations.org\/records\/item\/PHS.SecondPresbyterianChurchBurialRecords1838-1860_Vol6#?c=&amp;m=&amp;s=&amp;cv=13&amp;xywh=-410%2C-2056%2C10725%2C11841\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vol.6, p. 8 of the same church\u2019s Burial Records for 1837-1850<\/a>:\u00a0 Burial entry 590 for October 28, 1845, records the death of Susan Jackson Bancroft, daughter of the Secretary of the Navy.\u00a0 He was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Bancroft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">George Bancroft<\/a>, a wonderfully energetic and broad-minded man who took full advantage of every opportunity given him for education and making a social contribution.\u00a0 He was appointed Secretary to the Navy by President James K. Polk.\u00a0 His appointment was political, and his time in office was brief, but long enough for him to establish the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis to provide structured learning for midshipmen awaiting assignment to ships. Little Susan was 6 years old, from Bancroft\u2019s second marriage to a Bostonian, Elizabeth Davis Bliss; Susan\u2019s middle name was for Andrew Jackson; her father was a staunch Democrat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By this time, but before the coming of medical examiners, churches were recording causes of death where possible.\u00a0 The church record states that Susan Bancroft died of \u201cmarasmus,\u201d usually interpreted as starvation, this unbelievable given the Bancrofts\u2019 prosperity and sophistication.\u00a0 Susan may have been a fragile child, and her cause of death \u201cfailure to thrive\u201d because of her body\u2019s inability to assimilate certain proteins.\u00a0\u00a0 Again, why this church?\u00a0 Bancroft then worked in Washington, D.C.
