The Corporation of St. John's Church in the Northern Liberties, being involved in a debt of about $17,000, sought means to reduce that amount [image 1]. A committee appointed for the purpose proposed holding a concert of sacred music in a central situation in the city, which would afford an opportunity for those disposed to contribute to the relief of a sister church, and be profitable to St. John's [image 1]. To this end, the committee respectfully solicited the use of St. James' Church, pledging that it would be left as clean and in as good order as they found it [image 1]. The letter, dated Philadelphia, January 21, 1824, is signed by committee members John Ashburner, John McKinley, and Joseph S. Riley [image 1].
