Abstract

This work comprises two documents relating to Christ Church, Philadelphia. In the first, Henry J. Hutchins addresses the Rector, Churchwardens, and Vestrymen, resigning all offices he has held for some years, as he is about to leave the city to reside elsewhere. He states that he has made out his accounts as Warden, as treasurer of the Charity fund, and as treasurer of the Committee on H. Rigby's legacy, and that he has asked Moses Kempton to serve as acting Warden and Treasurer until the close of the Church year on Easter Monday, April 20, when Wardens and other officers would be elected [p.1]. On April 27, when annual committees are appointed, these accounts would be handed in. Hutchins expresses affectionate wishes for the future prosperity of the congregation.

The second document is a letter from Thomas C. James, dated December 17, 1835, addressed to Moses Kempton, in which James—recovering from a violent cold—requests his quarter's salary sooner than expected, asking that a young man cash the check (the whole or part, say $200) and bring it to his house. He notes his intention to stay indoors through the week and expresses regret at having been too unwell to receive Kempton on an earlier visit [p.2r]. The remaining pages contain miscellaneous financial calculations [p.2r, p.2v].
