Description
The practice of renting pews was common in 18th and 19th century churches; members paid a fee for the right to occupy a particular pew every week. This bound manuscript is a record of pew rents due to Christ Church, St. Peter's Church and St. James's Church in March 1812. Entries are listed by pew number, with occupant's name, number of seats, sums due and sums paid. Christ Church pew rents are listed from the beginning of the book, St. Peter's pew rents start after page 28 with a new page 1, and St. James's pew rents start on the following page 27.
