The practice of renting pews was common in 18th and 19th century churches; members paid a fee for the right to occupy a particular pew every week. This bound manuscript is a record of pew rents due to Christ Church and St. Peter's in March 1789. Entries are listed by pew number, with occupant's name, number of seats, sums due and sums paid. Christ Church pew rents are listed from the beginning of the book, and arrearages are listed on pages 14 to 16. St. Peter's pew rents start on page 19, with arrearages listed on pages 28 to 32.
