Description

Gilbert Tennent (1703-1764) was an Irish-American Presbyterian clergyman, and one of the leaders of the Great Awakening.

Tennent wrote this sermon, "On the mystery of godliness," in 1747. He begins by citing 1 Timothy 3:16, "Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory;" and 1 Corinthians 2:7, "No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began."
