A letter dated January 15, 1818, from a committee of the Delaware Fire Company addressed to the Vestry and Wardens of Christ Church, requesting a donation toward the cost of building a new engine house [Image 1]. The undersigned committee, appointed to collect a sum of money sufficient for building the new engine house (now finished), report that the building stands in Hartung's Court, running from Second to Third and between Market and Arch Streets [Image 1]. The engine is described as being of the first class, carrying one hundred and fifty feet of hose, and the company also maintains six ladders and several fire hooks situated in different parts of the city, all kept in good order [Image 1]. The company consists of sixty members and has been active for a number of years, having always been able to meet its expenses until the present difficulty arising from building the engine house [Image 1]. The letter is signed by committee members William Chrystler (No. 3 North 3rd Street) and Horatio G. Rowley [Image 1].
