Petition dated November 1, 1887, from individuals connected by family or memorial ties to Christ Church Burying Ground at Fifth and Arch Streets, addressed to the Rector, Church Wardens, and Vestrymen of Christ Church in Philadelphia. The petitioners state that the Corporation's revenues are insufficient to provide the desired level of care for the “hallowed and historic Ground” and ask that an early plan be considered to raise a preservation fund [p. 1r]. They propose undertaking subscriptions for a trust fund of not less than $10,000, with the interest used for maintenance, proper custody and guardianship, and repairs and preservation of monuments, all expended under the direction of Christ Church Corporation [p. 1r]. The petition closes by emphasizing the desire to preserve the burial ground as a “sacred repository of the dead for many generations” and to protect it from further damage by time [p. 1r]. A docket on the verso identifies the document as a “Petition for Preservation of Ground, 5th & Arch,” dated November 1, 1887 [p. 1v].
