Description
The practice of renting pews was common in 18th and 19th century churches; members paid a fee for the right to occupy a particular pew every week. This bound manuscript is a record of pew rents paid to Second Presbyterian in 1781. Entries are listed by congregant name, with pew numbers and amounts paid. Pew rents due in May of that year are listed from image 9 to image 35. Entries due in November of that year are then listed from the back of the book, upside down, with page numbers starting anew.
